Yes, I agree esp. on the little ones, but when I put a harness on her she will
not even walk in the house - I am just going to have to work with her and just
do 5 minutes at a time wearing the harness and getting her use to it several
times a day. They are so tiny that they could hurt their necks and trachea
really easily.

Hi Nancy,
Benji wears a collar but only for her tags ...   to walk her I use a
harness with the leash.   ...      I think it is safer than having anything
around her neck.

Thanks everyone for the advice, it was so funny because in my mind I thought
this is going to be a breeze as Mag follows Abbey everywhere and I was in for a
shock. I also have to admit that I have not been good about putting collars on
them in the house as they both just itch and itch when ever they have one on as
they do not have a lot of hair around their necks, I have tried 3 different
harnesses and a zillion collars so that maybe part of the problem too. So I am
going to put their collars and leashes on on the house and let them walk around
on them just to get the feeling - Abbey is fine, I usually do not even leash
her when we are on our court as she is trained to stay right next to me and
will not move no matter what - she loves my neighbors across the street but
when she sees them she knows that she is not allowed to touch the street. I
have always carried her across the street so she knows. Miss Magoo is just
teaching me patience as she is
learning at her own speed. Thank goodness I have a stroller. I also watched
some videos on you tube that were helpful. I even thought about getting the
leash that has the hooks for two dogs so that she and Abbey would be on the
same leash as she might be more likely to follow her sister - any one use these
and do you think its worth a try? We will get it sooner or later.

Something that worked for our Benji girl.....   might or might not work on a
little pup but, for what it's worth....

Benji was 4+ yrs and had never been on a leash according to what I was told.
So we leashed up and the first day just sat and discussed it.  She learned
quickly that she was attached to me.

She did not want to go even with me in front....  what I did was carry
her to  the end of the sidewalk....  she was happy to walk back to the
porch....

after doing that a couple of times I carried her to the end of the drive and I
let her walk back to the house....   then I carried her to the neighbors and
let her walk back....   then the end of the street etc etc.

She walks quite well now but always better walking toward home.
However, if we are in a store or farther from home she prances along like a
long time leash walker <G>

anyway, might be worth a try for you.....     just thinkin

Yes, I did say drag and I did not mean it in that way, I was unclear and the
remark about my neighbors coming out was meant as a joke - my one neighbor who
I call mom came out and was laughing as saying how stubborn Maggie is and made
the remark of something like I think you are going to just have to drag her
everywhere you go so that is how I started the post - I have kind of a
different sense of humor. My first post I might still have in my draft was this
long post about all the different ways I have been working with her. Having
Abbey go in front - having my granddaughter call her. But she continues to put
the brakes on so I try and get her to move forward and she won't move. I guess
I should be more careful on how I say things. So I have been spending every day
just trying to get her to just walk around the court and she stops and then I
stop and work with her to move and offer treats and then I think she is walking
and I look back and she has the
brakes on again. It was meant as help no matter what I do I can't get her to
move - like saying I had to drag my kids out of bed for school - I am not going
to keep talking about  this anymore and lets just move on. Do you honestly
think I would abusive my baby and  then report it on line. Please everyone lets
just drop it and move on. I just wanted some tips and went about it the wrong
way. After I read my long and boring post, I just redid it as I just got back
in the house after mom said that to me. I would die for my girls and that is my
truth.

GUYS!!! I really think you missed the point. NO one said a word about
dragging!!! Please give more credit here than that!!! But i will tell you a dog
needs to know you are serious about a walk...not wishy-washy...not "hoping" he
will go with you...but he needs to know what you EXPECT of him and playing
little bribing games doesn't hack it!!! I would hope you all had enough insight
about the women on this group to know that no one...especially sweet, catering
Nancy...would ever drag their dogs!!!!

Hi

dragging her will only make her hate walking. dragging her will make her never
want to walk on the leash. It needs to be a pleasant event. you might try this:

walk her on the leash in the house, where she knows where she is. make it fun.
you can throw treats down on the ground in front of her, so she has to take a
step or 2 to get it. Some Puppies have a hard time walking someplace they have
never been. the big world scares them. Let her drag the leash around the house
also. just to get use to it. she needs to know the leash is a good pleasant
thing.

My Ricky I do not think was ever put on a leash and taken anywhere by his
previous owners. He had no clue what a leash was. He is still trying to ajust
to riding in the car! I mean most dogs get all excited when they see the leash!
not Ricky when I got him... but now, he turns circles when I ask him if he
wants to go out for a walk!  he helps me now put his harness on. he stand very
still with his head up ready for me to put it over his head. He lifts his leg
up so i can snap it closed. he waits patiently for me to clip the leash onto
the harness.... and off we go!!
he does have his moments on walks where he wants to go in another direction
than me. so he will pull the leash, and be in a backward position trying to get
me to go "that way"... I just stop, and stand my ground, and tell him NO... we
are going this way. he gives up soon and on our way we go. His directions takes
me on the lawn, up small hills etc.

You can’t drag her…you need to wait until she will walk and follow you.

That is what I have been doing for the last few walks and all my neighbors and
coming out saying what are you doing to her - you are dragging that little
baby, but I just say she is in training.... you are right she will get tired of
being dragged and figure it out - oh Miss Magoo what am I going to do with you
and how much I love you. You brought life and fun into our life, Miss Abbey who
has always done what ever she is told to please me and Miss Magoo is the spice
that everyone needs in their lives! Thanks now I do not feel bad about dragging
her around the court. I will tell everyone that I have a top trainer and this
is what I was told to do...... thanks

My dearest friend! I think it s high time you just simply embrace the fact that
you have never owned a dog before...not a dog like Miss Magoo Butt anyway! She
seems to be her own breed...her own little bundle of sweetness. She has her own
way and her own mind. Lol!! If it were me I would just celebrate her
differences, spoil her rotten and give her whatever she wants and have no
expectations......No You say? Lol..no really I am just kidding...you know I
wouldn't do that...and I know you wouldn't either but it does sound much easier
huh??

Now on a more serious note...maybe if she knows you are serious about a walk.
No bending over cajoling her...talking baby talk...bribing etc. Just put that
leash on her...no talking to her about it...and standing straight and tall and
look forward...move forward...in a deliberate manner so that she knows Mama is
making the choice to go for a walk...don't wait for her to move...don't stop
for her. I would give her one command in the beginning..."let's go" and then
go. Maybe not fast...but purposefully. You stop when you are ready to stop.
Right now it sounds like my little Magoo girl is running the show...again!
After a few times when she realizes this is not her choice...her decision...she
might just go with the program. That's what I would do with her! Then when she
gets it...WHEN she goes with the program...I would make a huge deal out of it!!

Just my thoughts...

Ladies,

I have never had problems leash training my dogs, but Maggie just puts the
brakes on and does not want to do it. I let Abbey go in front, I have dangled
treats in front of her. I have been working and working with her and she is so
stubborn (but I love that about her too). She learns every thing else so easy
so what am I doing wrong - please help me!!!!! I feel like I have never owned a
