All I have to say as a breeder that I believe I am responsible and I read
your post Peggy and still consider you a very good friend.

Subject: Re: [Chihuahuas] Dani's Surgery tomorrow

Hi Beth,

I don't have anything against breeding dogs, as long as they are good show
quality, bred to the standard of the breed, and not the average pet quality.
Only let them have one litter per year for a couple of years and then get
spayed. We need good stock for most breeds. This is one of the reasons why
their are so many health issues with the dogs of today because they are ill
bred to begin with.

Their are thousands of pet quality Chi's and other breeds in shelters and
rescues, that's where they come from, peoples pets, BYB, PM's. True most of
them start from the PM's and then are sold as a pet and then are bred,
because the owner wants one of their own puppies. It just that no one can
guarantee that a couple of years from now, those cute puppies that they bred
four years ago are now in a shelter waiting to be PD. If that fact weren't
true, you wouldn't have so many in shelters to begin with.

If their weren't so many shelter dogs that needed homes right now, I am sure
that some of my views on the subject would be different. But when you
network for dogs that are in shelters and see their faces and then the next
day their faces are not on the list anymore, because it was their last day
on this horrible earth...it does a job on you, and you try so hard to get
people to understand to please don't breed, don't buy...instead, save a
shelter dogs life, he deserves to live!

Right now, because of the way things are, for every pup that is brought into
this world, it has just taken away the chance of a shelter dog from having a
home. That's the cold hearted truth, and many people don't want to except
that reality, unfortunately.

I wish that every person that says they truly love dogs, would try to do
something to help all of these shelter dogs. Their are so many ways, like
networking for them, not breeding any breed, not buying a dog, giving to a
shelter either in donations, or food, blankets, toys, bowls, whatever,
rescue, foster, etc. It has to be a joint effort for all dog lovers to stop
the massacre of thousands of dogs every day across the states.

The sad truth is that more and more people are breeding their pets just to
supplement their income, during hard times. Why else would a person want to
breed, especially since they know that so many shelter dogs need homes. If
they are not breeding to improve that particular breed and are not in such a
program, then they are just breeding pets for the money and no other reason.
I know that a lot of people say they don't breed just for the money, but
because they just wanted one of their pets puppies, and they are telling the
truth, but then what about the rest of the litter? It just added to the rest
of the list. You can't breed without having made money, unless you intend to
give all the pups away for free, before you even breed your pet, and that
still doesn't solve the issue that they may wind up in a shelter years down
the road. The statistics show for today, that for every litter of 6 pups
born 3.2 of them will die before the age of 5 and at least 2 of them will
end up in a shelter or rescue by the age of 3. That's how bad the dog world
has really gotten just within the past three years.

It's not like it was years ago when their wasn't so many shelter dogs, and
we bred our pups to share the joy with others. It is different today, and
people have to recognize that if we want to see the Euth list go down, then
don't breed your pet. If you must breed, then only breed good show quality
to the standard to stop all the unwanted medical and training issues that
pet owners are facing today and keep track of your stock for years to come
and make sure that they don't end up in a shelter.

I don't mean to offend any one on here, but these are the cold facts the way
I see them. I don't see any other solution to the Euth rate, except to stop
breeding pet quality dogs, whether it be a persons pet, the backyard breeder
or the puppy mills, so that they to do not end up in a shelter some where
along their life.

Hi Peggy,
My intention was to breed Dani when I first bought her. After all the work
she was,"more then any pup I had ever had" I was going to breed her and keep
one of her pups, but Dani is nothing like Smidgen & Chassis the two couch
potato's. I would have had homes for any of the others if there had been any

I have bred dogs off and on for the last 25 years & only one came back to me
as the couple that bought him separated. I always told any one that bought
one of my pups if they EVER had to give the dog up, I would take it. He had
his forever home the next day, and lived 14 years.

I guess I would have been considered a back yard breeder, as I didnt have a
kennel like my cousin did in Washington. I only would breed my female twice
and then get them spayed.
Mind you I only had one dog. I would wait a year in between. I never did it
for money either.

Beth, that's interesting when you said " I did have a bit of regret as I was
dropping her off.. Knowing I would never get puppies from her.. "

I felt the same way when I had Gigi spayed. I did actually entertain the
idea of having one litter from her before I got her spayed, but then, the
temptation left me when I felt guilty about having such a thought. She was a
Back Yard Breeder and had already gone through so much, and what a hypocrite
I would be, had I done that, since I advocate rescuing rather then
buying.

I guess it is a natural feeling, since they are our babies and we want them
around for ever, even in their off spring. You and I did the right thing....
so no regrets...okay?

Peg

Yes they do.. I was in line with about 20 other people with dogs. I am not
sure how many they do in one day, but by the looks of it allot. I am sure
there is more then one doctor preforming the surgeries. The Humane Soc. in
San Bernardino is a new facility, very nice compared to what it was a few
years ago.
One thing they didn't do that the paper work said they would do is clip her
nails. No biggy as I can do my dogs myself, although Dani I do need my
boyfriend to hold her as she is a wiggle worm.
Just glad it is over.. I did have a bit of regret as I was dropping her off.
Knowing I would never get puppies from her..

now back together and happy. Sounds like a reasonable price so Yay for
your vet too.

Okay everyone.. Dani did well yesterday.. I made it through too.. I have to
addmit I cried when I had to hand her over.. Just something about handing
them off..
When I picked her up she was happy to see me.. She was drool n on her self.
I had her microchiped too. She was a bit restless last night so I gave her
some of the pain meds that I paid extra for. The total for spaying and
microchip $115.00
So not too bad.
I am just happy she is okay...

She will do fine, Abbey did not even use a cone and left her surgery site
alone. I did ask for pain meds and I am glad I did as the second and third
day she was uncomfortable - then it was like nothing happened at all. I also
bought some baby food (meat) for her when she got home.
Let us know how she is doing tomorrow.

Beth, My little Lola was spayed at the shelter when I got her. I don't
think she had to much pain and that is without any pain meds. They glued
the incision and didn't give her a cone. The problem I had was that when I
was a work or sleeping she would lick at it and it opened and had to be
reglued many days later. Valerie

Hi all,
I had to go to California and was leaving Dolly to be boarded and I asked if
they would spay her on Monday morning and I would be back in the afternoon
to pick her up. They said they would do it on Saturday and monitor her
there. When I got back she was groggy from the pain meds but it really
didn’t seem to phase her too much (2 days later).
I had to take Desi to be neutered before 4 months…he had a genetic problem
where one of his testicles was not attached to the kidney. The vet had to
make several incisions to finally find where the testicle was floating
freely inside. At the same time, the vet removed his dewclaws. Desi has
never been a quite resting puppy…and he was running around the house even
with his little paws hurting from having the dewclaws removed. I think that
our little ones don’t feel as much pain as we humans do.

Hi, Beth. I have had two chihuahuas fixed. My female was groggy and just
wanted to sleep for the next 24 hours. My male was, if anything, more
energized than ever. I had to keep him crated sometimes because he would
run around the house like it was a racetrack. Crazy. He was eating that
night, no problem. My female looked at me as if to say, "How could you?"
She didn't eat until the next day. Thank God for Nutrical. They both made
full recoveries and are as healthy as ever. Good luck and Dani will
definitely be in my prayers.

I am getting that nervous feeling in my stomach today.
Dani is getting spayed tomorrow, and I always get nervous about any surgery
on my babies. I drop her off at 7:30 am and pick her up by 4:30.
Having it done at the SB Humane Soc.
I am taking the day off, just cause I know I won't be able to think about
work.. LOL.. Say a prayer for Dani!!!
