My vet said it is OK to give Dolly & Desi Pedialyte to keep up their
electrolytes when they have diarrhea, or when they spend a lot of time
outside during the summer months.

The amount to add to the food was just enough to make it a little more
creamy. Dolly has low blood sugar sometimes and I just use the NutraCal.
When I am sick and she is sleeping a lot with me, she usually won't eat. I
jump start her with the Nutrical. Then I leave her in her area and about 10
or 15 minutes later she will eat her kibble. Very rarely do I use the
pedialyte, and that is only when I need to get her to eat when it has been
about 18 hours since she ate. Usually when she isn't eating, she isn't
drinking either. The only time that I give her canned food is when she
won't eat any kibble for 18 hours or more.

During the summer I do add pedialyte to the water all of the time. But the
amount that I add to the water is about 1 part to every 3 parts of water.
This is what my vet told me to do. They have it on their website also for
when the animals are dehydrated. I have been advised to give Dolly some
Pedialyte (not much) directly into her mouth via syringe, but she doesn't
like that.and I only do it when she is dehydrated.

Joan, Pedialyte & Gatoraid is good, but my Vet warned not to give to much,
because of the high sugar content. That's why they came out with NutriCal
for dogs and cats. When I had my maltese's they were very prone to
hypoglycemia and even that Vet had told me not to use the Pedialyte or
Gatoraid because it can jump their sugar level too high and too quickly,
which would cause even more problems.

Wow..

Sometimes when Dolly won't eat, I put a little NutriCal on my finger and
then after she eats that, I leave her in her area and about 5 - 10 minutes
later she will eat her food.

Yogurt and ice cream is probably good for her being pregnant.

I think that once she becomes accustomed to her new surroundings and the
love that you give her, she will begin to eat. Do you know what she was
being fed in her old home? It seems like it may not have been dog food.

As far as the vitatabs liquid.buy a little syri nge - or your vet can give
you one. Then instead of putting it on her food, put it to her mouth on the
side where there are no molars. Push it in just a little at a time. That's
how my chis get their liquid meds.

Dolly is my picky eater.she loves the Royal Canin Chihuahua food, but
sometimes when she is sick, she won't eat and after about 18 hours of no
eating, I mix some canned dog food with some pedialyte. Dolly likes the
fruit flavored best. That will not only get some nourishment in her but
also some electrolytes for dehydration that she might have.

Good luck,

Please keep us posted.

I could use some help! I was given a chihuahua to foster 5 days ago. Here's
the background------first,I have had larger breed dogs all my life,
bulldogs, rhodesian ridgeback/boxer mix, never a small one. This little one
was rescued from an elderly lady who had a houseful of chi's, interbreeding
etc, who was unable to care for them any longer. She was in shelter for
probably at least 5 days, know absolutel y nothing about this little girl
other than the circumstance above and that she is pregnant. The vet
estimates she is around one year old and 1 month preggers. The shelter was
sure she was bred with another chi, thank God! Heres the tough part. She is
very malnourished. She weighed 3.3 lbs when taken to vet. He said she was
healthy except for bad tartar problem and being so underweight--no
worms, heartworm, respiratory probs etc. Her belly is huge. She is skin and
bone and huge belly. I am having a rough time getting her to eat. Vet
recommended puppy chow and pedigree wet-little champions. Well she won't eat
on her own. I actually have to hand feed her, and she won;t touch dry food,i
even put in blender and made it into a fine meal, tried with broth, everyway.
She hardly touches the pedigree wet unless i hand feed her tiny specks of
it. I have cooked liver, ground turkey, ground beef, ribeye, and she will eat
about a teaspoon worth at a time if its fed to her by hand and wont touc h
any grains, I made some brown rice, tried sticking a single grain in with
her meat, no go. She does like yogurt and vanilla ice cream, give her about
a teaspoon or two a day, all she will eat. I have been feeding her about a
teasp. or two every couple of hours. Besides her eating problem she is very
skittish. She has finally warmed up some, but is fearful of anything new.
She doesn't know how to play, she stays in her doggie bed most all of the
time, but is very sweet, no snapping or barking. Vet gave us vitatabs liquid
vitamins, supposed to give 2 cc's twice daily. I am lucky to get 2 cc's for
the whole day,put a tiny amount in the food i am feeding her each time. I am
scared to death that she won't make it through this pregnancy. At this point
I am not concerned so much with the baby/s I just want her to make it
through. Its been a long time since we've whelped any pups, and this one is
an extremely precarious one. I guess What I need to know is what is the
ideal amount o f food she should be eating? I don't know if she is eating
enough.I offer it to her often every hour or two, but not sure. She is just
so malnourished, you can see her whole skeleton. I am on pins and needles
here trying to bring this tiny girl through. Any help on feeding tips/help
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
