I have the front carrier too Deanna, I got if for when my ex and I took a trip
to Lake Tahoe, this is just when I had Smidgen. It was great for her.
Yes I am from the San Diego area. My grandmother lived in Ramona when we were
kids. We would go to Julian all the time. You have to stop at Dudleys Bakery
down the hill from Julian! OMG The best baked breads and pastries. I try and
get down there around the Holidays, didn't this year though.  I love to go see
the wild turkeys. I just know where they are! Some of my girlfriends and I were
going to horse camp down there, but there isn't a good horse camp in the area.
I also collect Polish Pottery. Julian and Solvang are the places I find it. My
boyfriend bought me this beautiful serving plate, it was 130.00, very
expensive, but I just love it!!

I have to tell a story that happened when we lived in Florida. I have always
thought that I should be allowed to take my furbabies anywhere I went so...
Steven and I had just bought my first ever chi and I was in love! We decided to
stop and eat at a buffet and we didn't know what to do with Nino so I emptied
my bag purse and tucked him in and we went in. All was well until I went to the
food bar to fill my plate. My sweet little Nino must have smelled the food and
he not only popped he little head out before I could do anything his little
body was on the food bar!!! I grabbed him up. my tray of food and ran to the
bathroom to fix this problem. Lucky for all of us it was early in the day and
they weren't too busy so nobody seen him before I could get him away from the
bar. We laugh about that to this day. lol

carrier...just like a baby and put a pink baby blanket over the top so no one
sees her head. The few times I have been stopped I simply say this is not a
dog...she is my baby...they smile usually and I just walk on. I think
They expect crazy people here in CA. Beth...do you ever take yours over to
Victoria Gardens? Even the restaurants there are dog friendly...the ones with
patios...which I think all of them have. Myrtle had chicken at the Cheese Cake
Factory about a month ago! Lol!!!

You know some of the stores don't really know the reason why a dog can't go in.
They just say 'no dogs allowed' and can't give you a reason when you ask. One
time I was in Target and a lady had a tiny Yorkie in a dog carrier. The dog had
her head out of the carrier and the carrier was in the top part of the shopping
cart. Within minutes, two security guards appeared out of no where  and
demanded that she leave the store. She tried to argue that it is not a food
store and wanted to see the dog clothes to see if they would fit her dog. The
security guard said that the store has a Snack Bar and that's why dogs are not
allowed. Of course the Snack Bar was at the other end of the store, but that
didn't matter.

I would love to be able to take Gigi to a mall, but they won't even allow them
in the mall, even if it is in a carrier.  That is sooo ridiculous!

I find that hard to believe and you are right fine the guilty and not the mass.
I hate poor excuses like that. Some of the Goodwill stores here won't let me
bring one of the babies in and I said I didn't understand that they let all
those kids come in a play with the toys, leave them on the floor, rip clothes
off the hangers and make messes in the bathroom. My babies do none of that!

They claim the reason is that people don't clean up after their dogs at the
street fairs, and children step in it.
Well then, since it is a law to clean up after your dogs and their is always
police at the fairs, then they should fine the guilty person. I walk my dogs
first and clean up, then go into the fair and I don't have to worry about it.

I understand how you feel. I am a big fan of bringing the babies along to
outdoor events. I actually composed a list of pet friendly businesses so I can
bring them along. I only bring one or two at a time. They take turns. But most
of the antiques stores and thrift shops know all of my dogs.
The thing that I don't get is the county fairs here in Ohio. A few years ago
the stopped us from bringing dogs. It's a fair with farm animals and no dogs
allowed? Really?
I noticed when we are in Maine and New Hampshire they are a bit more dog
friendly. In Mass. when we went to P town shops welcomed dogs and the sidewalk
cafes served them.

That was the best.

I am not far from Huntington. LI is okay, it just isn't too dog friendly.  It
has only been within the last couple of years that we even got a couple of dog
parks, and that took years! Their are just way to many restrictions at  parks
and beaches for dogs. Now they want to band them from the street fairs. The
street fairs are the only place where you really see a lot of dogs, everyone
brings their pets, because it is the only public entertainment that dogs have
been allowed.

Well said Carol. Thank God that they are asking for help, rather then to just
drop them off at a shelter or worse yet release them on the streets with the
freezing temps. They must be devastated that they have to give them up. Your
suggestions of trying to foster them, was a good idea too. I only hope that
they can do that, and when things are better, they can get them back.

I know that here on LI, NY it is extremely difficult to find an apartment that
allows dogs. When I first moved here, the original owners didn't want dogs at
all, and none of the other tenants had one. I had been looking for three months
for an apartment that would allow me to keep my maltese. She was 13 years old
and already diagnosed with heart problems. Not to take her with me, was not an
option. I can't tell you how many landlords I begged, and how many I even
offered to pay extra, just to keep her. Finally, after two interviews and
several phone calls this landlord agreed to me paying him $50.00 a month more
to keep her. Yes, it was highway robbery, but her days were limited and I told
the landlord that. 10 months later she had a fatal heart attack. At the time, I
was on a limited income too and had no idea, how I was ever going to find that
extra $50.00, but believed that the Good Lord got me this far and He will work
out the rest. He did,
because I was surprised two months after having moved in with a raise from my
employer.

But, not everybody is that fortunate.  We never know what Fate will throw at
us especially in these difficult times. I just pray that I can continue to stay
here, and it is hard with all the increases in rent that the new
landlords has given to us. But I also know that it will be almost impossible to
find another apartment that will allow dogs. I just wish that others will try
every available option to them to keep their dogs, and if all fails, then do as
these people are trying to do, by finding them a good home rather then just
dump them.

Hi Raven,
Let me introduce myself. I am Carol Anne and I work rescue and shelter dogs
through re-homing and foster. I also have adopted 11 of my own chihuahuas.
Mostly from rescue or puppy mill situations. I have a great deal of experience
with placement and re-homing. I read your question and have considered it
carefully before I responded. But it is imperative that I voice my opinion so
perhaps you and others might understand how harmful a question, such as yours,
can be.

The original poster has some sort of situation that makes it impossible for her
to take her dogs. She didn't share why, but I am sure she has one.  It is very
hard to admit that you need to re-home your personal pets. For one, they have
been with her some time and they are part of her family. For two, it makes you
feel bad knowing you can't provide for them any longer. In addition they well
feel judged.

My concern with this is that we, as rescuers, see dogs and cats discarded daily
from people that just can't care for their pets anymore. They don't know what
to do and they don't want people looking poorly at them so the panic at the
last minute and dump their pets off on country roads. Some owners take them to
local shelters but most don't. And even those that end up in shelters they end
up being euthanized due to over crowding and severe budget cuts. Here in my
area they are overwhelmed in the shelters. And with the economy being what it
is people are dumping animals daily. As I write this there is 3 small
chihuahuas in the local shelter I am working to find homes for before it is too
late. One has been there past their time limit!

So I would just ask that we not ask questions when people feel the need to
re-home their pets.  They have their reasons and it is hard enough on them.
Instead we should help them with alternatives or suggestions. I know I would
rather die than give up my beautiful furbabies, but who can predict the future.
You never know when you may need to ask for help.

Thank you for taking the time to listen to me.
