Ditto here, too.

Two weeks ago, my mom's dog ran up diagnostic bills of an astronomical $1,500 (which all indicated she should be in perfect health). But the little Chi started to feel even worse. So we then opted to have a complete organ ultra sound and some other tests done by a Specialist to the tune of another $2000. The ultra sound finally (hopefully) found the problem; so we can now treat the little Chi to get her better. Since my mom is on a fixed income, we're paying the vet bills. Nevertheless, it will take months for us to get these extremely high bills fully paid off. The Chihuahua BTW is 15 years old. However, she is worth every single penny we are investing in her health care. Hopefully, she'll now live to be at least 20 years old like many of her relatives.

My mom doesn't live with us. However, when we were first married (& were on a very limited budget ourselves), my parents never failed to help us if we had any unexpected doggy medical emergency. In our family, the dogs have always been part of the family.

Even when you have basically healthy dogs, things can happen. Just like with people. The life span of people used to be much shorter than today because the same kind of medical care wasn't available in the old days as it now is. The same is true for our pets. We, who care, make sure our pets get the care they need. It's just part of life.

The true expense of having a pet is not what you pay to obtain the pet. Instead, it costs far more over a lifetime if make sure the pet always gets the best of care. Those who aren't willing to get proper medical care for their pets probably shouldn't have pets. For those of us who do make sure our pets get proper medical care, it's just a part of life.

Ann,

I could have written the same exact message! I bet many of us
in this group could too.
