I don't know what it's like in other areas, but the news here has repeatedly reported that on any given Saturday night something like 40% of the people driving on the roads are legally intoxicated. I find that percentage hard to even imagine.

When I was in my accident, the ambulance driver told me that she had once ended up in the hospital herself because a drunk driver had crossed over and hit the ambulance head on. If she'd been in a regular car, she would have been killed. So no one is really safe from drunks who get behind the wheel. I'm sorry to hear about your grandma. I really wish there were stronger penalties for drunk drivers. Maybe then, there would be less families having to mourn the needless loss of a loved one.

No, because Monster doesn't yet have a car seat or a kennel for in the car, you aren't a bad doggy mommy. Lorena, you're just a doggy mommy who didn't know any better until now. As we go through life, we all learn things that are very important. When I was a kid, my family always let our dogs just sit on the car seat. Back then, no one ever thought much about it. Even when I grew up & first started to show dogs, I only crated my dogs for long distance trips. But after my friend was killed, I realized that the dogs should always be protected whenever in a car; just like a baby. Going from here to the corner can potentially be just as dangerous as driving across the country. You never know when an accident might happen. It's not just what we do, but also what the other drivers on the road do, too. Prior to that night, I never considered the drive to and from the vet's office as being dangerous.

I now feel safer going out to photograph Grizzly Bears in the wild in Alaska than I do getting on the Interstate here. Statistically, I actually am safer out with the bears!!! Far safer!

Wow Liz, I'm so sorry you lost your baby and your friend. Drunks are the worst. My grandma was killed by a drunk driver before I was born. I don't think I will be wanting to drive for a while and I will definitely be getting something to keep Monster safe and I don't think I will ever put him in the front, even in a crate. Those airbags are brutal. I don't think I even wanna sit in the front either. If I need a new car, I will be getting a big one!
