I don't think its a Texas native but I have enjoyed mine immensely. It
looses all of its leave during the winter and the flower buds sprout from
what appear to be dead branches, then the lovely maroon leaves from the flower
fall off and the green leaves sprout from there. I have a friend who told
me that she had heard of them called a magnolia but when I bought it, many
years ago, it was labeled Tulip Tree. Every year, it announces that coming
of Spring.
