I was over at one of my friends house. She has a toy poodle that is 6 years old and has cataracts in both of her eyes and some other health issues because she was a puppy mill puppy. She told me that her and her son (freshman in high school) were talking about her one day and they both decided that if she were to have something wrong that would require surgery or lots of meds to help with her pain - which would not help the other issues that she is having - that they would take her and do the humane thing to end her suffering. There are times when I think about things that may happen.I wouldn't put either of mine through surgery to fix a knee when they are older because I see my sweet Dolly suffer everytime that it rains or the barometric pressure goes up. She gets out of her little bed when I get home and it takes her about 30 seconds to stretch out her leg so she can walk or run out of her area and outside. She is young.had her knee surgery before she was two.so her healing rate and recovery rate is so much faster than if she were 10. I know it is very hard to know when the right time is. My brother and sister-in-law had a very sweet dog - part Basset Hound and part Beagle. When I went to their house Christmas 2008, she was dragging her leg several feet before she could stand up on it due to disk problems. It was another four months when she was actually leaving a trail of blood as she dragged her body to her food and water bowls and my brother was knowing that they had to do something for her (besides all the prednisone they had been giving her.) So, he said to my sister-in-law.what would you think if we went to a friend's house and they had a dog that was dragging itself across the floor to eat and dragging outside to go potty? That is how he got her to realize that Pearl really was not having any quality of life. So they made the appointment to take Pearl to end her suffering. I always want to remember for my two that quality of life is very important.not because I don't want to pay for the vet bills.but because their life at that point is a hell on earth. So making that decision to relieve your little one of the painful life that they have is an act of LOVE. It is still sad, but the right decision is made for the little furbaby.
