re: leash training I use a harness so as not to cause  trachea collapse.  
Personally I'm sorry my dogs aren't paper trained-we had  a monster storm and 
they sunk into the piles of snow and refused to move..too  cold.. I had to 
dig them a path-brrr. They hated the snow, me too. Have you  tried a group 
walk or walking with a pal with a dog the pack instinct  often takes over . 
They walk beautifully when we walk with other  dogs.
