HI Sue - I love the liners because it keeps me from having to scrub the boxes all the time. My cats all have their claws - but they seem to be pretty good about not tearing them up too much. Good Luck...(and yes- cat urine is an awful smell - I love cats so very much and can't imagine my life without them walking all over me - but cat urine is one smell that makes me hysterical)...
