Yeah…adding Desi when I only had Dolly didn’t really require too much. I already had puppy pads – and of course Desi used them much more than Dolly, toys I already had, and then I am buying twice as much food. One bag for $30 lasts 55 days. When I think of it like that it doesn’t sound so bad divided by two dogs. However there are the other things that happen. Desi had to have the extensive neutering surgery and had to have his dew claws removed – the breeder said that one of her breeder friends asked why she didn’t do that and she said she was afraid that she would hurt the puppies. I don’t know if she was using nail clippers or what, but someone told me they just need to tie a piece of thread around them when they are newborn an in three days they just fall off from lack of blood supply. That was two things that I didn’t expect – I knew normal neutering but his cost me at least $50 more and then I also had to pay for the dew claw renewal (but not extra anesthesia.) Desi jumped on top of Dolly when she was under a blanket and hurt her knee - $1500. Dolly had her umbilical hernia repair before I got her, but the repair broke inside and although the vet and I were watching it, out of nowhere a couple of weeks ago it pooched out more and extended further across her belly…that was another $250 for the surgery, and the Rimadyl and Tramadol for her pain. After I got Desi was when they started the canine flu shots and the first year it was two injections - $25 each twice the first year and then once $25 each for the past two years. All the regular shots are $10 and that includes a full exam every time. Neither of mine have bad teeth. Their food has enzymes that are supposed to help with tartar build up and sometimes I use the PetzLife gel…they love that…minty flavor and smells pretty good to me.
My neighbor, Judy, only has Mandy. In the last 2 ½ year, that girl has been through a lot. First she had a bladder stone the size of a skittle removed. Then she had to be on the special food – I think it is low residue or something like that. Six months later they had to do the blood tests again and her crystals were too high, so they changed her food to another brand for that. Since May she has gone to the vet three or four times due to her spine. There were x-rays, steroid and anti-inflammatory shots, etc. Now she is supposed to keep her on the Phycox every day for the rest of her life. It is those unexpected things that really hit us hard…and with multiple dogs it can multiply very quickly. I have to keep Dolly on the anti-histamine most of the time now as a preventative and also step it up to a full dose when I hear the gurgling. This is affordable when I get it from CVS instead of the vet’s office, and he is happy to help me out writing a prescription so that I get the best value. I would love to have more but just dont have the money..I told my husband we need to win the lotto and then I can have my Chihuahua farm. But for now two will have to do. Between the feeding and the vet maintenance..and god forbid if one of them has a serious illness..I just have to accept my limitations./ From: Judy Moon <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Friday, January 20, 2012 8:25 AM Subject: RE: [Chihuahuas] Duchess, the Peke I am looking to adopt a Peke and a Boston Terrier when I get moved. LOVE PEKE's - before getting Charlotte I emailed various sites from the web about rescuing one - not one response - then about 3 weeks ago someone in Ohio responded - but it was too late. I drove about 200 miles to get Duchess a purebred peke. (The breeder had sold her into slavery at a puppy mill. When I got her she was filthy, had abcessed teeth, and much more. She was only 2 years old, but had 2 or 3 litters already. She became a feisty little Duchess. She was royalty that had been mistreated, but always behaved like royalty.
