What do you mean you won't accept that behavior? What if she is just
grumpy being disturbed while she is sleeping? I think I would be grumpy too
and probably bite, not just snap at somebody's nose if they woke me up with
their face in my face.

I know plenty of really nice people, who are not so nice if they get
jarred awake.

Have you checked her hearing? It sounds like maybe she doesn't hear you
coming and gets startled.

If she is grumpy or easily startled, it might make things worse to keep
"bothering" her. It might just be something she needs to grow out of. Being
grumpy when she wakes up doesn't mean she is not/will not be a sweet dog.

Also, if it happens when you try to move her, it might be worth a trip to
the vet to see if there is anything that might be hurting her. My puppy George
is only grumpy when he is in pain.

One other thing. George isn't good at waking up, it takes him a few
minutes to wake up enough to know where he is and what is going on around him
and I am careful to not expect him to react or respond normally until he is
fully awake and aware or his surroundings, kind of like a toddler :) This was a
new thing to me because Rylie is instantly awake and functional.
