Truth be told those beds cost less than a flat little bed in PetSmart with the little ridge around it. I have been injured from people rear-ending me while stopped. I know what that has done to me, so I don’t want Dolly & Desi in the car without being restrained. They love going on car rides; and they love their booster seat. The stroller…I do need when I go somewhere with them. I can’t walk or stand long unless I am leaning on something, but also, I can always find Desi…I don’t even want to think what he would do if given the chance to meet all the dogs at a dog fair, or maybe if he found where he could get extra stuff to eat…LOL From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Monday, January 23, 2012 3:58 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [Chihuahuas]HOW IS DOLLY'S BELLY? Yes…and what made it harder is that Desi and her are attached at the hip as far as napping in the recliner and laying outside together, etc. Almost two years ago Dolly had knee surgery and I kept that eCollar on her and I tried to keep Desi away from her but he pretty much sat on the bed guarding her. I was taking her down the street one morning (she was in the stroller) and I noticed that there was some seepage from her knee…and then getting closer a stitch was missing. I called the vet and I had to bring her in. The nice lady vet told me that I had to keep the eCollar on her at all times. I told her that I did. It wasn’t until I got home that I realized…they both sleep under the blanket…Desi was probably cleaning her incision and removing stitches while I slept. Although I didn’t have much notice of her hernia surgery, the top thing in my mind was how I was going to protect her from the Desi Lou Wound Cleaning and Stitch Removal Service. I did that community walk that day and I was tired and didn’t have time to go home and get the blankets all clean and sanitary. I went to get her a new blanket (I did that when she had her knee surgery too!) and when I went into Ross I saw the cute little pink bed, then I saw the matching blue one…I only needed one for Dolly, but I caved in and bought the blue one for Desi. He didn’t get his until Dolly had her stitches out and I told him it was for being so good. So the bed fit perfectly into the booster seat so I put the blanket in it first and then put her in the bed and harnessed her to the booster seat. When I got home, I had to get the stroller into the house, and then I put the bed in the stroller and it fit just perfect. Desi did jump from the chair to inside the stroller and I told him that he couldn’t be in there with Dolly. Later that evening, I took Dolly out of the stroller and was just about to go out the back door so she could go potty and I saw Desi – and he saw me at the same time – he was jumping out of the stroller. Then I told him that he can’t be in the stroller at all until Dolly was better. He understood with just that one sentence each time. Dolly would always wake me in the middle of the night because she wanted me to hold her…every morning I held her up and counted her stitches to make sure that there were still eight in her. Now Dolly & Desi are back to being nap mates and quite frankly Dolly is giving him a run for his money and chasing him around the back yard and chasing him in the house, etc. I can really use them both being calm today. I am almost caught up on emails and my throat is still killing me. The Doctors come on in 2 minutes! I know. A couple of days ago is the first time that I kissed it. I wanted to make sure that all the little holes from the stitches had closed up well. She is like a new dog…very happy and bouncy and eating like she never has before. I am giving her four ‘half meals’ instead of 2 full ones so that she will have food if her blood sugar drops. Other than that…she and Desi are loving just sleeping together. It is all rainy & yucky today. I need to go pay my car insurance, but I am so sick and still in my jammies. Maybe tomorrow. Hi Lynda, I did take a picture last Wednesday or Thursday…two weeks post op. I will post it again her for you. I am very pleased with the progress and Dolly actually jumped from the floor into the stroller last night…a bit scary especially since he got her front paws over and then had to pull the rest of her body up. I didn’t hear her screech, so I am assuming that little belly doesn’t really have any pain. Here is one of the pictures that is 2 weeks post op; where the Sherpa on the left looks a bit folded, then go across to about half way to the middle. I am very impressed: 3.<image006.jpg> From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Lynda Sent: Monday, January 23, 2012 6:14 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Chihuahuas]HOW IS DOLLY'S BELLY? Lynda From: "Joan Croft" < [email protected] > To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, January 23, 2012 4:20:54 AM Subject: RE: [Chihuahuas] cranky behaviot That is good. I am so glad that you have Charlotte. I am kind of glad that you brought this up, because it made me remember Desi growling when I tried to move him (but he wasn’t awake, didn’t open his eyes…just kind of growling in his sleep.) Dolly has the opposite, if she is sleeping and I move my hand – perhaps to put a blanket over Desi or something, it startles her in her sleep and it is the reaction that she kind of opens her mouth to snap as she is turning toward my hand that is moving…but again…it is a reaction when they are sleeping…and with Desi I don’t really think that he was awake. Dolly was usually sleeping but not very far asleep and it is usually when she is already having the respiratory problems. Not sure why that may play a part…unless maybe she gets a little hallucinations or just weird dreams. Never bites, just hear her teeth hitting together and then she looks at me and looks like she is confused, then turns her body back to go right back to sleep. I think it is subconscious on my part, but I do talk to them if I am going to move them…I really didn’t think about it until this discussion, but I just do…I will say something like ‘Dolly, I need to move you so that you’re not pushing into my stomach.’ and then everything is fine. Desi is like a dead weight when he is asleep and I do have to talk to him and sometimes to move him I have to actually wake him a little because I can’t move him when he is so sound asleep. Wishing everyone and their Chis a very good nights sleep. Tell the pups to not kick you and you will let them sleep until the morning…LOL From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Lynda Sent: Sunday, January 22, 2012 8:06 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Chihuahuas] cranky behaviot Pam, Thank you!!! I appreciate your reply very much. Everyone: I am gentle & loving with all my animals; hence the reason they are so loving. Even my rabbits are like little sweet dogs-but were beasts when I rescued them, so I'm well aware of what I'm doing. I simply asked a question about her snapping because when researching chis and talking to chi owners I was told they can get a bit 'fiesty'. Charlotte is marvelous with strangers-runs to anyone-delights in their attention- I'd like to keep it that way! She is exactly right..this is the time to deal with these type of behaviors, when the puppy is young. This is exactly how little dogs become little tyrants because they don't have strong Alpha pack leaders and rules..just like children. Dogs have an instinct as to what people they can trust. Also, has anyone taken the time with her to socialize her ~ gently and over a period of time, NOT JUST A SNAP ON THE NOSE?????? It sounds like you are being way too impatiant with her as well as expecting too much too soon. Dogs are like kids, each personality is different. Maybe she just needs a little extra loving and gentle care. I will take her off your hands if you like. I hate to see you both so upset. Itsy will do this because she does not like being startled or bothered when she is sleeping. I always make it a point to say her name name and here girl, come on girl time to go out. She is fine then. Don't get your feelings hurt, it is not personal, it is a reaction. I guess my point is that not all things fit all dogs. Sounds to me like she just does not want to be bothered while she is resting. Not all dogs will always be alike. Ask yourself how she is otherwise? Is this the only time she does that? My other 2 dogs are sweet, well behaved, loving, even tempered loves. I've worked with them & they are such wonderful dogs-well trained & very respectable. (altho they've trained me well too) LOL I've noticed when I lean over to kiss Charlotte when she's sleeping she snaps @ my face. The first time she did this I was shocked! Did it again and couldn't believe it-my feelings were hurt. Then I went to move her & she growled. I gave her a 'no' command each time but she doesn't even react to the command. I tapped her nose once & said 'no', but she just curled up & when back to sleep. I will not accept this behavior so I make a point of 'bothering' her sometimes when she's sleeping so we can work on this. Anybody have any other ideas?
