Interesting you mention this.  Actually the man has a Border Collie and the 
puppy we have that was dumped is an aussie or aussie mix and I already was told 
about the gene by a woman who runs the aussie rescue group - something I'm 
talking to vet about.  The only heartworm treatment recommended is interceptor 
and that is what the vet gave me before I knew about the gene but I don't think 
it's because they knew about that - they didn't realize he's aussie at the time 
- just worked out.  He had puppy revolution I think it was when he first came 
and that is a worry - not sure what was in it.  He was full of fleas too.
