I am in AZ, but in the middle of the city, and the way my yard is laid out, they have lots of places to go.  In 12 years in this house, and nearly 40 in the valley, I have never had a dog get hurt, nor have I heard of one getting hurt nearby, by a predator bird.  Only by other dogs.  Now, out in the boonies, it is another story.

Nancy aren't you in AZ?  If so, AZ has plenty of predators birds, as well as other wildlife that can harm a small dog.

I have three, and am gone 9 hours a day too, but I have a dog door and live in a city (no predator birds here) plus I have lots of cover in my back yard.

Should I get another dog? I think my dog is lonely. She love to play with other dogs. My real question is two dogs a lot harder? Or the same as having one? I'm at work about 9 hours a day.
