Hi Kathy! Small world.....I live in Suffolk County. You may have seen the
post the other day that some one else had called the shelter and was
interested. I have not had any verification that she was adopted, but as of
yesterday she wasn't listed anymore, so I am assuming she got got pulled. I
am so happy that that post was cross-posted and she got saved!

To tell you the truth, yesterday I did a little research for chis on
Petfinders for the north east coast and was very surprised that there is
several hundred available for NY, NJ and CT. After doing some more research
I found that they have been shipping them here from CA and the South kill
shelters a little at a time and that there was two mill closing one having
100 chis and another 125 chis and chi mixes. That was within the past couple
of months and the dogs were vetted and rehab and now looking for homes.
Most of them are now in rescues. I also saw that the total numbers went from
14,500 in February to over 17,000 chis listed, that now need homes!!! It has
sadly become much worse again and with summer time breeding and people
moving, it may very well go higher.

I also saw a chi in the Hempstead Shelter, although she wasn't listed today,
so she probably either got adopted or was pulled by a rescue. Another in the
city with the Humane Society and several are at the ASPCA in the city, if
you want to travel there. It seems that the Bklyn, and Queens shelters are
starting to receive chis too and be aware they are kill shelters, not high
kill, but if they don't have the room, they only have 7-10 days at those
shelters.

You have to understand that kill shelters do not list the dogs until they
are on death row. When a dog is an owner surrender, they put the dog up for
adoption immediately, IF they have the room for it, if not, in high kill
shelters they are PD the same day and what breed or how big or small doesn't
matter. Strays are on hold for 3-5 days depending the shelter policy, if not
claimed then they are put on the list for adoption and usually only given
another 3-5 days, if not adopted or pulled for rescue it is PD, for lack of
space. If a dog is sick or injured, even it is not a serious hilliness or
injury, it is deemed unadoptable and PD the same day. So when anyone sees a
list for a dog and it says that the dog has been at the shelter for a week..
...you better believe that it only has another 24-72 hours left depending on
where the shelter is. Any that are on Petfinders and are in a shelter only
have 3-7 days, unless it is a no-kill shelter, but even the no-kill shelters
will send a dog to a kill shelter if it doesn't have the room and the dog
was with them for a lengthy time and never adopted. The only places that do
not kill them are the rescues.

A person that is interested in adopting such a dog must act immediately as
timing is critical. You have to watch postings/emails constantly and call
the shelter and ask for a rescuer to call/email you immediately. You can't
wait two or three days to reply, it will be too late. Most of my listings
are for dogs that only have hours or if lucky a couple of days left.

So I suggest putting your zip in on Petfinders and I am sure that you will
find a chi. Just respond to the info that they give. I saw many very, very,
cute little girls on there especially at the CT rescue, which isn't that far
of drive. Hey, you may find two and make for a small little pack of three!
Lots of luck and please post and introduce your new baby when you find her.
