Huh....I have never seen that before. For a chicken, she sure is pretty! Does she lay lavender colored eggs to? LOL!
Take care and stay cool!

Lol, that is Dani to the tee! I had her spayed right when I got the baby chicks, and she went through a hormone change. Between the baby chicks and certain toys, she became a mommy. The chicks were in the kitchen for 6 wks. Under a heat lamp, she would check on them and just watch them. They too think she is there mama.. Lol, no the Lavender isn't one of the color Chickens, its a real color breed. Google Lavender Orpington. And see what I mean I will try to attach a pic. LOL, Dani sounds like my Princess....I call her a mother hen because she does the same thing when my parrots make certain sounds when they are alarmed. Princess has that same worried look on her, and whines, and cries, and insist that I get up and check on the birds. Actually she was right twice when it came to my smaller parrot who had gotten herself caught on a toy her a toe nail and couldn't free herself. The other time she was having a hard time passing an egg, and Princess was really worried and acting very anxious around her cage and whimpering.
Wow, I never hear of Lavender chickens!! Was she from those chicks that they color feed to get weird colors? I had always thought that the color feeding was only temporary and that when the chick is older and molts, it disappears. I saw them one time at a country fair. They were so cute!
Hope your other one gets over her cold fast.

Hi Peggy, No the chickens don't really get in the water. I showered them with the hose and they really don't like it much, but I know it cooled them down cause they stopped panting. I have 5 girls, two buff Orpingtons, one Lavender Orpington, one Maran and 1 Cochin.
One of my Buff girls has a upper respitory infection " a cold" I have her on medication and seperated from the others right now. I will post some pic's in the next few days. The Lavender is really Lavender! I just got her in Feb, but she was not a baby like the others were when I got them. Dani my long coated chi thinks they are all her babies. In the morning when they are cackel n and laying there eggs, she runs out to check on them. If they get to really cackle n allot, she cries and looks worried LOL. I call her chicken mama..

Hi Beth!
Wow, that is hot, hot, hot! Poor chickens! Won't chickens cool off in a big pan of water? How many do you have now? I remember when you first got them and sent pictures.....they were very pretty, as was the coup that you made. When you get a chance and things cool off maybe you could send some more pics now that they are adults.
Stay cool!

Its been really toasty here in southern CA, Yesterday it was 108 in my area! Pups are all inside with the A/C keeping them cool. Thank god I am not working at this time, so I can keep a check on my chickens too! I have had to hose them down cause they were panting like the dogs do. Never seen them get this hot. Beth and critters... :-)
Neighbors say it is very unusual.
I wouldn't have thought that it would get that hot up there either. We finally have low 80s today.

We are cooking up here in N. Idaho. Almost a week of 100 and more degrees. Very unusual.
We have had a break in the heat. For the past two days the temperature has dropped into the 70s and we have had some lovely rain. Both most welcomed and appreciated.

Healing prayers toward you.
It was in the 90's to 100's ...for ten days here. Finally broke yesterday, down to the 80's. Ii was so nice to turn the AC off.
I fell and broke my left wrist on June 26th, stepping out of my horse trailer's tack room onto a step stool...that moved/slid under the horse trailer. :( So, I've been stuck at home in the AC hanging out with the girl doggies. No horseback riding for a few weeks....that's depressing.
Being home with the girls...really made a huge difference with Hazel, my most recent rescue. Every day I see a bit more of her personality. :)
Every one stay cool and kiss your babies.
