My dog does a whole song and dance before he'll  actually start eating. He 
approaches the bowl, jumps back, does this a few times  from diff. angles 
then finally eats a few kibbles before actually digging in.  It's the same 
premise. He appears to be afraid of the whole thing. I find if I  put the bowl 
in a corner somewhere quiet he does  better.
