It depends on where you live but in general shots should be done by 8 mos but
an unknown background in a pup may make 2 sets of distemper etc necessary. At 4
mos they can get a one year rabies then every 3 years after that. Most people
do not get distemper etc after the dog is an adult. I don't give lepto since it
often has bad reactions, only covers some strains and my dogs aren't near rats.
I use Ivomec for heartworm prevention, $38 for  3 yr supply for all my dogs +
and Dominon L for flea prevention. A chihuahua should be 6lbs or under but with
all the BYB and PMs I have seen "purebred" Chis of 20lbs and "purebred" Minpins
of 18lbs and 15". I adopted now 8 mos old Alice about a month ago and am taking
her to CGC classes. She is my smallest personal dog and foster at 3.5lbs.
HoneyB is an under standard MinPin at 9" and 5.5lbs. Alice is a very happy pup
with a constant wagging tail. I have rescued 3 other Chis but they were 6lbs
each. Gotta watch where you sit with the weee ones..lol.

Hi All,
I'm Alice and a new Chi owner. I have owned dachshunds (or rather they owned me
LOL) since I got out of college in the mid-90's. A little over a month ago, my
dachshund, Mortimer Snerd (Morty for short) passed. He bonded most with my
hubby. He was pretty much devastated. A week later, I talked him into going to
our local shelter "just to look". Well, we walked out having adopted a
Chihuahua mix. Hubby named him Mickey. The shelter thinks he's a mix but after
looking around the net a all kinds of Chi pictures, he's come to the conclusion
that Mickey is a deer head chi. I know it's not an AKC recognized breed and it
doesn't matter since Mickey is a companion for hubby. Mickey is much bigger
than a chi. He's 14 lbs, runs like a deer and hops like a deer.

This past week my buddy and shadow, Bob Barker, an 8.5 lb red dachshund passed.
I had to have him out down because of renal failure and he stopped eating. He
was 5 y.o. when I adopted him. 2 days ago hubby and I went to our local shelter
looking for a small companion dog for me. Well, I found a cream colored 8 mo.
old Chihuahua. The shelter named her ChaCha. I renamed her Minnie. She's on,y 6
lbs. for me, that's small but I understand that's big for a chi. Mickey is
twice her size. She's a sweetheart just like Mickey. They have somewhat the
same personality. At the meet and greet with Mickey, Mickey seemed to come out
of his shell more than he has in the month we've had him. He loved playing with
Minnie and plays pretty gentle with her. Oh, forgot to say, Mickey is 4 y.o.

I'm a first time puppy Mommy. Never thought I'd own a puppy. I'm happy about it
and glad Minnie is an older puppy.

My question is, what can I expect from an 8 mo. old chi? In 2 weeks Minnie will
be due for her 2nd set of puppy shots and a 2nd deworming according to the
shelter. She should be done with all that by 8mo, correct?

Alice
