I am very sorry to hear that he is feeling so poorly. But honestly, spaying and neutering does not cause those symptoms. He has a very bad allergy and the odds are it is his food or treats, or it could even be from flea meds or something sprayed in your yard or just old fashion rag weed. Some dogs are even allergic to rubber toys. Believe me, it is just a coincidence that it started after he was neutered, when his resistance was lowered.
Him hiding, well that may be because there are other dogs in the house, and when one dog doesn't feel right the sick dog may fear being picked on, which is normal behavior for a pack of dogs. Also when a dog is the oldest in a pack his rank is moved to the bottom of the pack. Or it could be that he is also having what they call weird behavior seizures. Unless the seizure turns into a full blown seizure you won't see the usual jerking and jumping around. I don't know what test were ran when you took him to the vet to warrant such a high bill. Could you tell me what they did? Maybe Gigi's story will help too since she showed some strange behavior right after she was spayed. I rescued Gigi 3 yrs ago, and I had a full senior blood panel on her and I think it was a total of 5 vets that said I had nothing to worry about. After she was spayed she started to act strange. She would walk around smelling the legs on all the furniture and some times the corner of the walls. She would sit and stare at the baseboard heaters and not move for the longest time. She would then dart around and freeze and stare at the ceiling. If I called her name, or clapped my hands or banged on the floor there was no reaction from her. Then one day, I couldn't find her and I searched everywhere and knew she could not get out so she had to be some where in my apartment. My bedroom closet has sliding doors and it was opened just a little bit, she must have really tried very hard to squeeze into such a small opening, but there she was hiding in the laundry basket and half buried in it. She refused to come out, she acted like she didn't know me or my other dog. I really was very perplexed and upset with worry over her behavior and had no idea what it meant. When I picked her up she fought to jump out of my arms back into the closet. So since it was very late at night, and she wasn't in any pain that I could see, I left her alone, and checked on her every 15 minutes. I couldn't sleep, so I stayed up all night observing her from a distance. Then I got up in the wee hours and went into the kitchen. Gigi has an unstoppable appetite, and as she came into the kitchen I tried to give her a treat, but she walked backwards from me.....still afraid. When the light was shinning on her, I could see that her eyes were very large and dilated. Now I knew something was really wrong, but didn't know what. I threw her the treat and she ate it, so I threw her some more and she ate them too and then went back into the closet.. I decide to get ready and shower to run her to a vet when they opened, but half an hour later she came out of the bedroom all happy and wiggly, like nothing had happened. So I posted to chi groups and asked if anyone had a clue what was going on. Some one told me about weird behavior seizures. Apparently, while she was hiding in the closet at the beginning she did have a full blown seizure that I didn't see, but her dilated eyes and her actions, and wanting to be in the dark, were proof of that. So I also went on Web MD and paid to ask a Vet about her symptoms and she immediately said that she was having the Weird behavior seizures, and gave me the links to read up on it. She also asked me if Gigi has any liver, kidney or heart issues, or diabetes. I had said none that the vet had mentioned to me. She also said that it could be that the anesthesia caused the seizure, and not the actual surgery, if any of her organs are not fully functional. So considering that Gigi was a BYB dog for years and had several c-section scars, which meant that she was under anesthesia several times, one more time being under may have caused her some brain damage. After I received the blood results from the Vet that did the spay, I took it too another Vet which is also her current Vet, the 6th one!, and she wasn't happy that they didn't tell me that she also has borderline liver issues that can trigger a seizure. She personally would not have performed the spay unless it was very necessary for fear that she could have a seizure on the table. For all I know, maybe she did, and that other Vet isn't telling. So I had to find a low protein and low fat diet for her, because of the liver issue. I did that and she was improving, and I didn't see any more weird behavior for months, and then it started in again. Then I found out that Rosemary, the herb, that is in a lot of dog foods and treats, especially the all natural and holistic types can cause seizures in dogs that are prone to them. So once I stopped the the treats and changed her food again, she stopped having the weird behavior. All of this took months to finally figure out. Point is, we are there best doctor, when a dog starts to act weird or shows allergy symptoms. We have to keep a daily diary of everything that we feed them, how much we feed and what time they eat it. Keep a record as to what they do for the day and how they react to things, how long they sleep and is it before or after they just ate something. Record the shampoo you use, the detergent you use to wash their beds and clothing and even the floors and carpeting, aersol sprays are also another big issue. It is by a process of ilimination to find out what is causing the allergy and strange behavior. I kept a Daily Diary of Gigi and I am glad that I did because I would never have remembered all the things that I did and gave her including people snacks to figure the whole mess out. Today she is on a strict diet of her kibble and she gets only 1 milkbone biscuit, split in half twice a day. If I give her a couple of nibbles of cheese or egg, then I have to reduce her kibble by a few pieces to keep the protein level down for the day. I would suggest to record everything that yours is doing. Take a second look at what kind of foods you are feeding him. I hope that his kibble is a good meat base and not a corn base, preferably no corn at all and no Rosemary. They use the gentically modified corn and corn gluten in dog foods and treats, and a lot of dogs are allergic to it, as well as wheat. Don't use any flea meds, as many dogs have a bad reaction to them as well. They can also have a bad reaction to their Booster shots and the Rabies shots. Again I sincerely doubt that the neuter is causing his allergies, but something else is. Bear in mind that when they go under anesthisia, no one knows what can happen until afterwards, and also a dogs resistence is lowered a lot from the stress of it all. Consider to that Chis are suseptical to low sugar and that can also cause a seizure, and or make them want to hide because they are feeling weird and don't know how to tell us. Blood test would show if his sugar levels bounce up and down, and possibly diabetic, which can also give sores, if a test is taken before he eats and then again after he eats. Weight gain can come from overfeeding, to high a fat kibble, diabetes and a low thyroid condition, which a simple blood test can tell you. Skin sagging in the testicle area is normal for an old dog. Less life in him can be because he is over weight and doesn't have the energy to do anything. What brand of food are you feeding him and how much do you feed per day? How much does he weigh now? Less life in him. I have had him hiding under a bed for days at the time, listless. Not to mention the weight gain. And I walk him 2 times a day. And then the tissue on his belly is sagging down. I know dogs must need their hormones just like us humans. Its known that if a man does not have his testicles, he will not have a good life. I am not breeding my dogs. I just want them to have a normal life, w/o sickness.
