Well said Robin. It is incredible to me that even in so many chi groups, people still want to buy a chi. These are the same people who are well aware of how many Chis are listed on Petfinders and also well aware of how many chis are destroyed on a daily bases. And where do they find them? From a BYB, and they think that they are going to get a better quality of dog then what a pet shop would sell, or what you would find in a shelter or rescue. People just don't get it!.......that by buying a chi, they are just promoting the breeding of them even more. BYBs in my opinion is anyone who breeds a dog that is not of the standard for the breed. It is a person who breeds a dog just for the money, and not because they want to improve the breed. Why else do people breed dogs? That covers just about anyone who breeds but doesn't have quality proven parents and grandparents and has breeding and vetting papers to prove that they are not genetically faulted either physically or temperament wise, and only purpose of breeding is to improve the breed and keep good quality chis in circulation.
Last year was the worst that I saw for the breed being destroyed in shelters because they were killing not only puppies, but preggie mommies rather then to bring more into the world and eventually would be killed anyway. I know of people who paid big bucks for their chi from BYBs and their dogs have either health or temperament issues, or both. If one thinks about it, you could if need be, apply the same cost to a shelter dog and save the dogs life, and a lot of times you won't even have the temperament issues because the dog is so grateful to you for having taken it out of such a horrible place. It's not just the shelters that have puppies, but so do a lot of rescues. All a person has to do is be patient and constantly check with the rescues if they want a puppy. I feel your anger with BYBs is as strong as mine. I also blame the public and the so called chi lover who supports them, rather then to adopt and save a life. Lets face it, people who breed dogs are just in it for the money, and scam people just like the pet shops do. They could care less about how they are hurting the dog world, especially the chi breed. And still the Backyard Breeders breed their barely purebred poorly bred dogs to make pups. Very sad that the USA tolerates this. BYB and Puppymillers should themselves be neutered so their genes can't be passed along.
