I had a maltese and a poodle once from pups and I never taught him, he just
did it on his own.

No, it isn't, bringing a toy or crumpled paper back when thrown is one test
in temperament testing. I encourage all my pups and try to get my adopted
adults to fetch. Alice was 7 mos when I adopted her but is a rabid retriever
now. Bringing a toy or paper back shows a willingness to work with humans
which one needs in a guide, or working dog.

ok stupid question but do all dogs know how to fetch instinctively?
I ask this because I haven't really taught Piper to fetch but she does it
anyway.
Well 3/5 times anyway. She will bring me a toy and I will reach for it. She
will
drop it. I will throw it and she will chase it and bring it back. Sometimes
she's
so excited she does 'laps' around my house and ends up in her downstairs
crate
and then picks another toy to play with.

Just curious
