Thanks for the thought Bob - it was the greatest avoidance of the subject in 
question I have seen for some time.

Anyhow, It seems that a little (a very little) insistence on a firm 
connection when checking things bent a few pins of the plcc socket. False 
alarm. Thanks to all who bent their minds to my headache. 

(Note to self: Stop Overworking, and you'll make a fool of yourself less 
often ;-)
