I'm no expert with stepper motors, but take a look at Allegro's UCN5804 stepper driver. It has enough flexibility to allow you to control speed, direction and step resolution with a simple microcontroller interface. I've used successfully with an AVR micro to position a CCD micrometer along an aluminum drum used in large laser printers.
Allegro also have other drivers specifically for printer applications.
