A Triac is two inverse parallel SCR's on the same die, with a a shared gate lead. >From experiance I swore that I would never design in a triac again. They are to prone to false firing (dV/dt type issues). My application was a phase control on a noise line. You should not have that problem with your protection circuit, I hope. For every ones future reference use real inverse parallel SCR's or Tecor's Altnistors, that are inverse parallel SCR's on the same package.
