The traditional method of using 1488's and 1489's
is usually cheaper when your power supply can
already supply voltages like +12V and -12V and
especially when you need several RS-232 lines
or when you want to support a lot of signals
like RTS, DTR, OH, AA, DCD etc.

I don't know what a MAX232 currently costs but
"in my time" they were quite expensive.
