Yes, if you have the right piece of software for it. We use such virtual COM-ports by use of a specialized module with several (e.g. 4, 8) serial ports (ICP 7188E4, http://www.icsdatacom.com/pdfs/ICP7520_ds.pdf) In this box contained is a tiny pc with DOS-like operating system running. Their drivers run on Win 2k and XP, and '98 too. You can also connect with Telnet- program to this box (IP, port) and what you enter appears at the module's serial port and vice-versa.
With Linux it should be relatively easy (I hope) to implement an ethernet-to-COM connection. regards Alois -- Author: Alois Bauer INET: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fat City Network Services -- 858-538-5051 http://www.fatcity.com San Diego, California -- Mailing list and web hosting services --------------------------------------------------------------------- To REMOVE yourself from this mailing list, send an E-Mail message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (note EXACT spelling of 'ListGuru') and in the message BODY, include a line containing: UNSUB CHIPDIR-L (or the name of mailing list you want to be removed from).
