If you're running windows, it's always possible to get infected, sadly.
After a serious tussle on April 23rd one year with CIH W95 (which
overwrites the bios on April 26th) I got into linux.
I still have windows for compatability reasons, and kids. I have
recently removed about 600 copies of the following virus variations
1. W95 CIH Reinfection, because I burnt a cdr while infected and
one of the kids started with it
2. CIH 1.2 because a box one son bought in had it
3. CIH 1049 (The August 2nd variety) came from God only knows
where
4. Sub Seven and pals because some dweeb had them on a disk and
ran them!!
5. Bloodhound W32 - don't ask me but careless practise had in onone of the
three boxes here - a windows only machine.
6. Operaserv W32 was a permanent resident for a while here, but we got all of
it except the source, appaprently
The effect of these on me was nil, because I run linux. The effects on
windows were s t r a n g e. The cause was largely that my nerdish
windows kids couldn't be assed doing regular virus checks. So
periodically they would complain about hardware, blame the registry, and
reinstall windows.
In linux (which I normally use) I have no virus checker, no infections,
and no worries. One linux box was comprimised online, but it warned me
that someone was running a symlink attack on me so I got out offline
andquit the comprimised program. KDE's libraries were the weak spot,
apparently. I believe it is fixed in newer versions.
