This is surprising, but not totally. Expect a branch soon.
There was a significant rebellion in that they lost a key guy over
policy issues. There is also a strong feeling that X was going in the
wrong direction; X has huge networking capabilities, and stiff
management. It is required as a multimedia gui with full streaming.
Getting multimedia to happen under linux is not funny currently. It is
done, but far less intuitively than under windows.
The job of management in these cases should be to channel creativiuty
to achieve the optimum end result. XFree's group management failed. X
is stable and can be used for several years without much alteration,
until there is a fresh set of video cards comes out.
I would be fairly sure many will all band up again under new management
and it will be Yfree or the like soon enough.
Search for a slashdot article last year by Alan Cox (?right guy) to
inform yourself a bit better.
