A 6-pin DIP smells a lot like an optoisolator/optocoupler.
If you suspect this part is defective in a circuit, you could easily trace its pinout, 
knowing some about optos. It would be even possible to do a rough functional test on 
the chip.
Off the bat, checking my trusty Digi-Key catalog I see some Sharp optos with part 
numbers PC852 and PC853, however these are 4-pin DIPs. I would further check with 
Sharp, LiteOn, Fairchild, to name a few.
