You should look at the controllers used in PDA's today:
e.g. Samsung S3C2410 (Arm9 200MHz 256Mflash 256Mdram on one chip).

Normal microcontrollers are simply to small (to less ROM and RAM) to
handle all the overhead of a USB-host-stack.
