Declan,
Is it possible to send me more details about this 8085 board:
It sounds much like a controller I have come across before (more moons ago than I care to remember)
Any markings on the board, a digital photo would be good

I have a CPU Controller card (8085 based, vintage 1987). The motor blew on the machine, power surges came and went, and now it won't communicate with the outside world. One chip is totally (I mean tetotally) destroyed, right beside the serial port. The com port on the relevant pc has also been blown, beacuse it was connected at the time.

It's by DYNAPATH, made in U.S.A.
They call it an "Aulixiary Control 2B"
As you see the picture, the black/pink thing is a backup battery, and the sn75188 is the dark chip just above the left "D" connector. The 75189 has it's decoupling capacitor folded flat nearby.
The big chip near the battery is an SCN2681, 8085 above it, and 8155 on the right.
I've a bit of reverse engineering planned. There's a enormous switched mode psu (5V, 500A?:) which also supplies the positive 15V. On that line was an open circuit 1N5224 (2.8V zener) which I reckon might be for remote sensing on the psu, or dropping the voltage in some way.
It just depends how desparate you are before you stop reaching into the grave trying to pull these things out...
