Sprage/Alergro did do that with parts, like the 5801 I had designed into a
system.  Same system that had 68HC001 (yes that is the right number) designed
into it.  Neither part ever shipped in volume, if at all, to my knowledge.

Cherey Semi. and Supertex have both done the same to me.  Had samples in hand
but then pulled the plug before doing production runs of the parts.   That is
why it is called the Bleeding Edge, from all of the bumps and bruises.
