Bill, we’re a helpful group but you really have to give us more to go on.
“Nothing happened” is not a useful response – something happened, the program hung up and appeared to stop; you received an error of some kind – please tell us what; the radio burst into flames --- something happened. I downloaded the chirp software – that’s a good start and I presume that you installed it; connected the cable to the laptop (and I presume the radio?) – what com port is it using, did you check?; opened the download – after selecting what radio from the drop down? – and I presume you tried to download using Chirp but that’s again, just presumption. Get the idea?
