What would be handy is to have a VM of Ubuntu with the old Chirp already
installed, so that can be implemented.
I am sure I have an old Ubuntu Live on a thumb drive with Chirp on it, but I
don't know if that can be made into a VM.

Right. You’ll have to continue to use the old version of chirp (which likely
works with your existing radios), and you can continue to use it on your old
computer. Nothing will change for you (just make sure to keep a copy of the old
chirp installer around).
Shiny nice new software wants to run on nice shiny new hardware and operating
systems that are being actively supported by their manufacturers. The old chirp
will be as frozen in time as your old computer is now. If you choose to get a
new radio that isn’t supported in the old chirp then maybe consider getting a
new computer first.
What, actually, is the problem?

there are a lot of hams I know that are still using Win-7 like I am and it runs
very stable for all my applications except Chirp-Next. So now I have to use the
older version of Chirp and am forced to get a newer machine with Windows 10 or
11 just to use the Next version of Chirp.
