Memo to the Chodosh E mail list from Yoseph Herman
14 Jul 04

YOUR HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED

During this Chodosh off season, I am trying to implement a new service that I hope
will be of value to many of you. I am working on setting up a Chodosh Bulletin Board
System (BBS). This will allow you to download to your computer documents such as

1)      The latest Guide to Chodosh in PDF format. (Now last years Guide is available
for practice only.)
2)      A program to read PDF files, if you need it
3)      The revised Guide to Chodosh for Mashgichim (not yet available)
4)      Latest reports from the US Department of Agriculture (This is current)
5)      Latest Chodosh news
6)      Other items of interest

I need the help of some people to try out this service in its installation/test phase. If your
have a few minutes to try it and send me your comments, then please read on.

WHY THE NEW CHODOSH BBS?

The Chodosh BBS will be accessed by dialing over the telephone lines, directly between
you computer and ours here. You will completely bypass the Internet, not use it at all.
This will have several advantages:

1)      It should meet the concerns of those Rabbonim who are adamant against the use
of the Internet.
2)      It will provide a direct connection, hopefully free from viruses and hackers.
3)      It should provide faster downloads of large files.
4)      It will provide a provide a message forum where callers can enter any new
Chodosh-related comment or message, view other peoples entries and submit
comments to earlier message.

HOW TO USE THE NEW SERVICE?

You will need a computer with a dial-up modem (not DSL). I am also assuming that your
computer is using some fairly recent version of Microsoft Windows (98, ME, 2000, XP).
To access our BBS, do the following one time preliminary setup steps.

1)      Activate the program Hyperterminal. (Start->Programs->Accessories->
Communications->Hyperterminal).
2)      Enter a name such as Chodosh, and choose any icon. Click OK
3)      Enter the area code=845 and phone number=356-9348. Click OK
4)      In the Connect window, click on Modify. Then click on the Settings tab at
the top.
5)      In the Emulation window, click on the down arrow and choose VT100J.
Click OK
6)      Click on Dial to dial our BBS.
7)      After you are connected, you will be asked to enter your name. You can use any
name, but, unless you object, use your own name. Use the same spelling each
time you log on. Conclude each entry with the Return or Enter key.
8)      If asked if you want to create a new user account type Y and return or enter.
9)      For password, choose Chodosh which you will enter twice.
10)     Hit return to accept the default option C=Continue
11)     If asked where are you from, enter your home town.
12)     If asked if you want pages, enter N=NO
13)     Keep hitting the Enter key until you reach the Bulletin Menu. There you will
find 3 options. Choose 1=How to Use This System for further instructions.
14)      View Bulletins 2 and 3 to learn how to download files and how to use the
message system.

Please try to download at least one file and try to leave me a message or two on the BBS,
or comment on the messages of others. Above all, I need to know how understandable are
my instructions and what your initial impressions are are. If you have difficulty leaving
messages on the BBS, please contact me by E mail.

Thank you for your help

Yoseph Herman
