The second issue of the Guide to Chodosh has gone to the printer today. I hope that all those in the USA and Canada who have paid for printed copies should receive their issues in 10-14 days. Overseas subscriptions may take a little longer.

I thank those from Israel who responded to my request for help regarding Nestle Cheerios cereals. I did not have the time to acknowledge each one individually, but the responses were very useful.

You may download a PDF version of the new Guide so far from one of the two sites. Send email to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I will let you know when the second, sefer.org site, will be available for downloading.

Meanwhile attached below is the front section of the new Guide including an alphabetical listing of all additions to and changes from the previous Guide. Note that this list contains several modifications to the ongoing information I had sent out piecemeal as Bulletins over the past several months.

ANNUAL MALT REMINDER

We never found any malt manufacturer that begins to ship Chodosh malt from the new barley crop earlier than Dec. 15. The malt is then shipped, Dec. 15 or later, to other factories that begin to use it in the end products. Therefore, the Guide assumes that all malt in foods is Yoshon before Dec 15. The date of Dec 15 is used as the Chodosh packing date for malt.

The following applications of malt pose a problem of Chodosh. Malt is used for several purposes. Foods using malt for flavoring or coloring should not be used if packed after Dec 15 since that malt may be Chodosh. That includes cereals flavored with malt such as Corn Flakes and Rice Crispies, as well as most pretzels where it is used for coloring or flavoring. Beer is also included in the category of items which are Chodosh because of malt. In addition there are specialty vinegars such as malt vinegar, terragon vinegar and salad vinegar which are made with high concentrations of malt. However, common vinegar, also known as manufacturers white vinegardoes not have any Chodosh problems. Therefore, the following common products should be free of Chodosh: ordinary household vinegar, and condiments such as ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard, pickles, etc.

Thusfar we have discussed malt used as flavoring or coloring. However, there is an other common use of malt. It is used in most baking flours for their chemical reaction, which allows the flour to react with the yeast and water so that the dough should rise properly. We have received psak halochos several years ago that baking flour is not a problem so far as the malt content is concerned. This includes baking flour that lists barley malt in the ingredients. (We have included dating codes for some baking flour for those who do not want to rely on this psak that this malt may be used. Call the Hot Line for details of this psak.)

If you know the dating code for an item that has a malt problem, then you should avoid this item if it was packed on or after Dec. 15. If the dating code is not known, then we recommend that the item would still probably be Yoshon if purchased up to Mar. 15.

ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS TO THE FIRST ISSUE OF THE GUIDE

WARNING: CHODOSH

Some tuna fish and tuna fish salads used in restaurants contain bread crumbs or flour. Care must be taken to make sure that such ingredients are Yoshon. Mashgichim of Yoshon restaurants should be especially aware to check the tuna salad ingredients.

WARNING: KASHRUS

Although not directly related to Yoshon, we would like to pass on the following: We have seen reports from kashrus organizations and from individuals that this year they are finding an unusually high frequency of insect infestation in baking flour, pasta and pearled barley purchased in local grocery stores for home use. This problem is not due to any storage for Yoshon, since it these reports came in at the beginning of the Chodosh season, in September. However, it does indicate possibly unusual problems for those who wish to store these for periods of time for Yoshon purposes. Since both flour and barley are available in Yoshon form the entire season, without the need for the consumer to store these (see the Guide for details) we recommend that you should try to minimize the storage of these foods, unless they can be stored in refrigerators or freezers. We further recommend that you use dating codes if they are given by the Guide, to make sure that the packages you buy at the grocery are not too old, to minimize the probability of worms. Finally, consult your Rav or posek regarding the possible need to sift all flour and check all barley and pasta before use.

What about packages without Yoshon label and not mentioned in the Guide?

We receive many inquiries via the Chodosh Hot Line and by email about a wide range of products. It is not possible for us to investigate each and every one and return an answer in all cases in a timely fashion. Therefore, if the food package of interest to you is not listed in this Guide and does not have any Yoshon label, you should try to call the company for information about the dating code used on the package. Often there is a Consumer Informationtelephone number on the package. Find out how to tell from the dating code when the package was packed. Then check the list of ingredients and compare your actual packing date with the following cutoff dates. If the package contains oats, it should have been packed before Jul 26 06. If it contains no oats, but does contain wheat or barley then the cutoff is Aug 9, except for noodles and pasta. For the latter, the cutoff is Aug 16. For spelt, the cutoff is Sept. 16

OTHER CORRECTIONS AND ADDITIONS TO THE GUIDE

Ó Adirim pasta is Yoshon at least up to, but not including the packing date of Aug 16, code 160808 (16=date, 08=month, 08=year+2) (Note: Adirim has told us over the years that they are always Yoshon. Therefore, in the past, we had listed them as Yoshon. To our knowledge, nothing has changed this year at Adirim. What has changed is the policy of the Guide to Chodosh. As explained in Preface A.1, starting this year, the Guide can only list products as Yoshon if they have a hashgocho for Yoshon, or have a dating code to guarantee that they are Yoshon. So far as we know, Adirim does not have any hashgocho for Yoshon. Therefore, within the new guidelines, we can only recommend packages that have a dating code printed on them that is earlier than the cutoff code given above.)

Ó Arrowhead Mills comprehensive Chodosh codes. For oats use the Chodosh packing date of Jul 26, for wheat and barley, Aug 9, for spelt Aug 26.
