*CHODOSH BULLETIN-1 MAY 13* *From the Guide to Chodosh-Y. Herman* *Chodosh telephone Hot Line 718-305-5133, email *[email protected] This Bulletin discusses (1) Our planned schedule of publications for the new season, (2) How to subscribe to next season’s Guide, (3) Our apologies for last year’s misjudgment leading to a very long delay before the publication of the first Guide, (4) Preliminary estimates of the start of the new Chodosh season, and (5) Form to use if you wish to fax in your subscription. (1) Planned publication schedule for next jseason’s Guide We plan BS”D to publish a preliminary brief edition of the Guide as soon as possible at the beginning of the new Chodosh season, approximately early September. This should have enough information to start the new season, including preliminary Chodosh dates and package codes for many packaged goods. The full Guide will be published when the mashgichim will get back to us with updated information. This does not happen until a few weeks after sukkos, about early October. In addition, there should be at least one update bulletin around January. All this will be mailed out to paid subscribers and be available by email. (2) How to subscribe to have the printed material mailed to you The subscription cost is $16 for all material to be mailed within the USA, $18 to Canada and Mexico, and $22 to mailed to Israel and other parts of the world. The preferred method is to subscribe using a credit or debit card. This is very convenient for most people and is easier for us. We accept Visa, Master Charge, American Express and Discover. If you are totally unable to charge to your card we will accept checks, but this is discouraged. *Those who told us to automatically charge their subscription to their credit card do not have to respond to this note!* *How to subscribe with credit/debit cards* (a) By recorded telephone message Call 845-356-9348 and record a voice message with the requested information: Your phone number, credit card number and expiration date month and year, name, and mailing address. Note we must have your contact phone number so we can contact you in case of questions. Do not leave us any Chodosh questions or other messages at this number. Use instead our Hot Line number 718-305-5133. (b) Fax your credit/debit card information You may send the above information by faxing it to our secure fax site at 888-755-7590. Please fill in and fax us the order form printed at the end of this bulletin. (Last year some people had trouble faxing us the subscription orders. We have now changed to a new service and expect not to have further problems receiving your faxes.) *How to subscribe by mailing a check* It is difficult for us to process your checks, so please use your credit/debit card when possible. If you must, make out a check to Project Chodosh for the amounts stated above and mail it with your full address information and phone number to Project Chodosh, c/o Y. Herman, 20 Sylvan Road, Monsey, NY 10952. Do not send us credit card information by email since email is not secure and your information may be compromised. (3) Our apologies for last year’s misjudgements. Last year was the first year that we changed our policy and decided not to print any Guides unless we make a strong effort to verify all information contained in them (rather than print preliminary estimates first and update them later, as in the past). We misjudged how long that takes. As a result, the first printed information did not come out until much too long after the start of the new Chodosh season. We apologize for the inconvenience this caused. Even worse, some people were not even aware that the new Chodosh items are already being sold until well after the fact. We apologize for this and hope to abide by the publication schedule given above. This means that the first publication should be released as early in the new season as was our practice in years prior to last year. We still hope to retain the attempt to publish information only after it has been verified. (4) Preliminary estimates for the start of the new Chodosh season. We give the following early estimates of when the new Chodosh season is expected to start, based on the experience of earlier years. -*Oats* products may be Chodosh at the end of July or early August. Last year the O-U was able to verify that oats in *cereals* made in the USA should not be Chodosh if packed before Oct. 1. It is too early to know if this assurance will be renewed for the new season. -*Spring wheat* products may be Chodosh by early August in the Midwest USA and by mid August, elsewhere in the USA. This includes bread, challahs, rolls bagels and pizza made in local bakeries. *Barley *(pearled barley used, for example in cholent) could be Chodosh by early September. However, in recent years we have had may heimishe brands Yoshon under the hashgocho the entire season. The above are preliminary estimates. We hope to have updates on this as a Hot Line news recording and by email, after the harvest of the Chodosh crop starts, at the end of July.
