I'd like to add my $0.02.. which is: I am so used to hitting '/' to search now, that I tap it and immediately begin typing by search term... which is dangerous because the search term may contain one or more hot-keys for the site I am visiting. (Yes.. happened to me 3x now). I realize that this is just because I am "used to firefox", but .. so are a lot of people. (Before chrome, it was the best option.) I suppose I will eventually get out of the habit of using '/', but I'd rather not. It is faster, and pretty much a standard these days. And really, I have never seen a site which hijacks '/', except for gmail... and you can disable that...
