I think one reason that you cannot always be redirected to  
https://mail.google.com
depends on your GMail setting for "Browser Connection" ie. Always use https  
or not.
Therefore, the https URL is not always the "correct" destination.

Chrome is just doing the standard thing that all browsers do: if no  
protocol scheme
is specified, just add "http://"; at the beginning.
