Comment #14 on issue 2541 by dhhwai: Opening a site using "--app" does not
allow you to see if the site uses SSL correctly
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=2541

@skylined, the reason you don't see any use scenarios is because all you
engineers
are thinking too technically, any don't see any value in providing users
with
indicators to give "warm-fuzzy" assurance (even though you correctly point
out it is
not necessary).

You are also wrong when you say "An SSL indicator confirms that you have a
secure
connection to the server in the address bar. Without an address bar, there
is no use
for an indicator." Although this statement is generally true, the "server
[shown] in
the address bar" is only a visual GUI display of the same value that must
also be
stored internally within the Chrome browser such that the SSL indicator
confirms you
have a secure connection to that server. Even without an address bar, a
visually
displayed SSL indicator affirms to users that they still do have a secure
connection
to the server that is stored internally within Chrome, which users have to
also imply
is the proper server setup in the app shortcut.

As well, the SSL indicator is the browser standard and already trained GUI
access
method for users to activate the SSL Security Information details dialog
where they
can confirm read and confirm that the Chrome internally connected server is
the one
they expect to be connected to and that the details also match with all the
details
provided in the security cert.

This is the other requirement for the SSL indicator; currently there is no
method to
activate and display the SSL Security info from an app shortcut Chrome.
However,
even if another method was provided, it would still not negate the clear
requirement
that the SSL indicator still needs to be shown.

Chrome engineers must recognize that many visual cues and GUI conveniences
are also
required functionality, even if their functional results are technically not
necessary.
