The ability to remove thumbnails is slated for this week's fixit: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=685 I'm not sure about populating with popular/cool sites (confusing?) and animating (distracting?). I do agree that we should populate these quicker, even if it means more churn at the beginning. Do we know why this doesn't work today?
