This was caused by Brett's r12491, which was a fix for issue 8651.
Brett changed the status bubble shadow from transparent to opaque.
Instead, the shadow
should probably be unchanged and the text box should not cover it. Brett
said he tried
to change the text box height without success, so it's not clear why this
won't work
right.
