ok now i am REALLY confused ;)

it's possible that all the specific things i tried to describe were due to  
this
bigger issue

a few notes:
there is no need to change to a Hebrew UI in Gmail just simply RTL the  
textarea

and the bigger note
it seems to have nothing to do with RTL or Hebrew at all
try selecting some English text using the mouse from left to right in a  
middle of a
sentence right here in this textarea (while it's still LTR)

press Shift+LeftArrow
other browsers will know you finished your selection (using the mouse) in  
the right
side of the word.
Chrome will just expand the selection to the direction you clicked no  
matter where
you ended your mouse selection

is that a regression or was it always like that?
