Comment #3 on issue 14023 by [email protected]: Help users get a new default
browser on uninstall
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=14023

From the comments on the e-mail thread it is clear that people think
windows has a
concept of a 'default' browser. This is not true. There are a bunch of
handlers and
every browser is free to take what they want. Furthermore, there are
indirections and
different ways these handlers can be configured.

Vista comes close to a concept of a 'browser', however the COM interface
has no
'undo'. Not that I think it would be robust.

The fact that nobody does it is not because 'everybody sucks', it is
because it very
hard and heuristics are easy to break.

Other edge cases. You set chrome to be your default and save the keys you
modified.
Meanwhile your other two browsers get automatically updated and along they
use a
different scheme of handlers. Now the user uninstalls chrome and we restore
the
values that do not make sense.
