I think #2 and #3 would be good. For #3, perhaps we should rename this method to something with HACK in the name similar to a few other methods which (in theory) would at least get people to read a warning comment on the method. With regard to #1, I believe that pfeldman (pavel) has a specific need for it to do what it's doing today, so this would break that use case.
