Could this be due to different OS UI font settings? Another possibility is  
IME
interacting with the omnibox in a strange manner.

Can you check what fonts are specified for the OS UI elements by selecting
'Properties' in the Windows desktop context menu (right-click  
menu), 'Apperance' tab
and 'Advanced' button in turn? There are a few different fonts you can set  
there. I
think 'message box' font is used in the omnibox.

Can you compare the type of IME you use with that your friend (who doesn't  
have this
problem) uses?
