We considered having a separate package for the repository apt source, but that would have meant two separate downloads. Our requirement is for a truly simple user experience for the average user downloading it from our web site, so it had to be all in one package. We are looking forward to ubuntu's improved support for third party repositories with bated breath. (We'd still need the current scheme for older versions, though.) Our intent is to only add the apt source on first install. Are you seeing something different? (Also, we won't add the apt source at all if you do "sudo touch /etc/defaults/google-chrome" before installing the package as documented at http://dev.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel#TOC-Linux That's there for anyone who wants to deploy chrome internally on a lot of workstations.
