calid.. : do you use 32-bit or 64bit Ubuntu? If it's 64bit, you have to do
what
juhpetersen said. And, try the following:
$ GTK_IM_MODULE=xim XMODIFIERS="@im=FOO" chrome &
where FOO is your IME name.
