Thanks for the detailed bug report.

One idea is to make the "default" profile write into these special  
directories, while
making the --user-data-dir flag override XDG_DATA_HOME etc.

I kinda expect most people, unaware of the xdg spec, will be upset to see  
data files
"scattered across" multiple directories.  That is, if you blow away
~/.config/chromium, you'll still have data in ~/.cache etc.  Especially if  
it
involves potentially-private data like cookies or pages you've visited.
